Overview
The chapel of Chrysosotiros (which is also dedicated to saint George) is located on a small hill outside the community of Vouni. It is a rectangular arched structure, externally constructed with stone, offering a panoramic view from its yard. Every year on August 6th, the name day celebration of the Metamorphosis of Sotiros is held with a big fair, attracting many visitors from all over Cyprus. The celebration of the Metamorphosis of Sotiros is one of the most important in the Christian Orthodox Church. According to the New Testament, Christ took his disciples Peter, James, and John with him to Mount Thabor in Galilee to pray. As they became tired from the climb, they fell into deep sleep. Upon waking, they saw a miraculous sight: Christ's face was shining like the sun and his clothes were as white as snow. Next to him were two Old Testament prophets, Moses and Elijah, speaking with him. This was the first time Christ's godhood became so apparent to people. Only on this day, the celebration of Metamorphosis of Sotiros, the strict fasting prior to August 15th is lifted and the consumption of fish is allowed.
